Gettin' Going, Gettin' Out, Gettin' Down with Collage Therapy

4 Wednesday Nights in January, 6-9pm

This workshop is for practicing artists who could use a mid-week chill-out, rev-up, on- your-feet appertif.  Sometimes life has prevented you from working and you need to get going again.  Sometimes you just need to get out of the studio and have some fun creativity with other artists.  Sometimes you just want to break loose and try new things outside your normal studio routine.

Whatever it is, a weekly art group using the spontaneity and immediacy of collage, can be a refreshing respite from the somewhat solitary life of the visual artist.

Size constraints in my studio will keep us to a raucous group of 8.  The goal is to relax, be crazy, and have fun. Bring whatever supplies you want to work with. I will provide book collage scraps, adhesives, watercolor paper substrate, hot tea and a warm fire.

Class fee is $200 for 4 weeks.

SPECIAL 50% off for January!!

n the Mini Enchilada we seek to unravel the secrets of compelling composition. The inherent elasticity of the collage process combined with the very diverse and interesting material of discarded books, give us a powerful laboratory to work in.

The Whole Enchilada con Paperbacks  focuses on the paperback cover, made from printed card stock (and sometimes embossed), which lends itself to sanding, cutting, sewing, folding, etc.

The Whole Enchilada con PaperbacksHardback covers are too thick for most of these maneuvers but have a fabric skin and paper dust jacket that can be altered much like paperback covers. The book board is wonderful to cut, carve, peel, saw, drill and can be used as the substrate we collage onto. This sturdier material also lends itself to more 3-dimensional sculptural aspects.

July 12-18  The Whole Enchilada con Paperbacks

Wed-Fri & Mon-Tues 10am - 4:30pm

$600 + tax*

This workshop focuses on two things: collage design using book materials, and an exploration of altering the Paperback book cover. We begin the workshop revisiting the principles of design and how to work with book collage materials. Altered book materials are supplied for students to construct a series on collages on paper. You then learn all the fun ways you can alter paperback covers yourself, to include: stitching, punching, cutting, carving, gluing, puncturing, sanding and inking.

This 5 day workshop straddles a weekend, giving students time to enjoy the galleries and sights of Santa Fe. We meet wed-fri, then mon-tues.

The weekend in between students are encouraged to enjoy The International Folk Art Market which comes to town once a year and is an incredible tour of fine folk craft from around the world.

Sept 24-26 Art Makers Denver - Book Collage Workshops

Three different one-day workshops held in Denver Colorado

See artmakerdenver.com for more details and to register.

My approach to collage focuses on using very interesting materials (I like books) and combining them into compelling arrangements with an eye to the principles of design. To me, the materials really stimulate my right brain with just sensory pleasure. I love the cracks, textures and colors of these old, used books.  I love the era they came from and how they evoke memories. I also get alot of inspiration from the words, or even just bits of words. The left brain approach of design principles lends structure to the creation process, which is often so amorphous.

All tools and materials are supplied. I have a special Student Stash of book collage elements that are the regular culling from my own collection (which is ever expanding). It makes it easier to start working if things are already cut into shapes or colors or text.

All of this is set in the relaxing summers of Santa Fe where it is easy to get around, the cooling summer monsoons bring their beautiful clouds, and there are plenty of art galleries to visit!

This 5-day workshop is an exploration into deconstructing discarded books and altering these materials for imaginative and surprising collage art.

Day 1: we review 2D design fundamentals for abstract art, as well as common structures that can be a starting point for your work in collage. Discussion of tools and materials will be followed by a demonstration of collage construction techniques. Students will be constructing collages from altered book elements that I provide on Day 1. Subsequent days they will be making their own.
Day 2: we will explore deconstructing the paperback book cover. Using a variety of tools I will demonstrate how to disassemble the paperback book, and then the many fun alterations we can make with the cover material. Students will be creating their own collage materials from paperbacks and adding them to their collages.
On Day 3: we will do a similar exploration of the hardback book. Students will first tear down a hardback book into it many interesting components, and then we will proceed to create collage elements from the remains.
On Day 4: we will be using acrylic paint to make elements from the inner pages of our discarded books. We will be using thinned down acrylic to tint papers and also more opaque paint to obscure any print on the page.
On day 5: we are back to design, this time refining and completing collages we have made.
